12.03.10 - Champions League: Kiel OK, Ciudad Real KO

The Zebras beat the defending Champion 33:26 and qualified for the quarter final of the competition with real chances to end the group 4th on the first place. Nikola showed his class especially in the first half.

In the end there were only four World Champions on the field, Didier Dinart missed the game beacuse of an injury. Kiel couldn´t count also on a decisive player, Stefan Lövgren was out with an injury. The rest of the superstars were ready for the fight.
As expected the game was very balanced in the first part, the first gol was scored after 4 minutes, by Dominik Klein on fastbreak. Beginning with the 11th minute, Nikola was the one who brought again and again his team the lead. Within 9 Minutes he scored 5 times fighting like crazy with the strong defence in front of him! Kiel managed for the first time to lead with two goals after 21 Minutes (10:8). Kim Andersson was the one who pushed his team from behind, scoring 3 important goals and his squad was in front with 4 goals (13:9/25.). Although, at the half time the scoreboard showed 14:12 for the hosts.
THW dominated the next 30 minutes, but they extended their lead only in the last 10 minutes. Both the goalkeeper Arpad Sterbik and the own technical mistakes impede Nikola and his pals to have a consistent margin. Fortunately for them, Titi Omeyer was there every time when the visitors came closer to a goal. Apart Titi, Filip Jicha performed incredible well in the last 15 minutes, scoring 5 times, but also Kim Andersson and Vid Kavticnik shined in the right moments. Within 13 minutes to go it was 25:23 for the Zebras, 9 minutes later - 31:23 and the game was over. The only thing that Stefansson and his teammates could do was to lose with 7 goals, 33:26.
