Kiel started better and was in lead with 5:2 after 8 minutes. It was the moment when HSV´s coach, Martin Schwalb, called a time-out who helped his boys to equalise after 18 minutes, 7:7. The hosts had big difficulties with the aggressive defence of the opponent and were not creative enough to break the wall in front of them. As consequence Hamburg took the lead for the first time in the game within 4 minutes to go from the first half, 11:10, and extended it to 14:12 at the end of the 30 minutes.
The second half had a hero: Thierry Omeyer. The Olympic Champion performed unbelivable and helped decisively his team to win the match with such a difference. He started his "one man show" in the 32nd minute, saving five shots in a row. His teamates got the lead back (16:15/36.). Even if they missed twice from the 7 meter line and the rival had again advance (19:18/42.), it was the last time when the visitors had a word to say in the dispute. Omeyer saved shot after shot and his team transformed the 18:19 into a 24:19, who proved to be decisive. Within ten minutes before the end, on the soil of the "Sparkassen-Arena" existed only one team, who won in the end with 29:22.
